Benjamin's House '24 Spring Update

4/30/2024

Picture
April is National Volunteer Month
From its beginnings in 2011, the board of directors has strived to help break the stigma of homelessness in our rural communities.  It has been almost two years now since we purchased the former convent and all property on the east side of Heart Island Parkway.  We have new spaces for our Continued Care Housing Program residents. We have a garage to house our van and lawn care equipment. We are very thankful.
At the same time, we find that it is a huge responsibility to take care of this property. Our response to this has been to create a volunteer program with opportunities for the community to get involved. Our past experience has validated that volunteers can be the backbone to keeping things running smoothly at Benjamin’s House. Volunteers greatly extend the range, quality, and variety of our programs and services.

We will strive to provide training, supervision, and support for those who participate.  We have prepared a handbook to give you some essential information about our opportunities, policies, and expectations. To get started, here is a link to the revised Handbook for Volunteers.
We look forward to helping you find those opportunities.

Sincerely,
Friends of Benjamin's House

Resident Success

"Domestic Violence is what caused us to come to Benjamin's house...""

I have become a more confident mom and my kids are opening up and sleeping better at night. I have watched my kids go from sleeping curled up in balls to being stretched out and sleeping through the night. I understand that it's due to the effort I have put in, but I would not have come this far without the support of the staff.

When I was struggling they were there for me anytime day or night. I will always be grateful for the support and the friends I have made along the way. You guys are truly special and with your help I have achieved a dream that I have struggled for a long time to achieve."

While we remain at full capacity, it's heartening to share that we are making strides forward each day. Our dedicated team is tirelessly working on updates and improvements, and we're excited about the prospect of expanding our continued care housing program once our fire system is installed in what was formerly known as the 'Warming House.'

At our shelter, we are committed to serving the homeless and those in need with compassion and dignity. Our mission goes beyond providing a roof over their heads; it's about offering a comprehensive support system to help them rebuild their lives. Our Case Management services are the backbone of our wrap-around case management program, ensuring that each individual receives personalized assistance to address their unique challenges and goals.

It's important to note that we are here for our house guests 24/7, providing a safe and supportive environment around the clock. However, the reality is that affordable housing remains a significant obstacle on the path to self-sufficiency for many of our residents. Despite this challenge, the success stories emerging from Benjamin's House are a testament to the resilience and determination of our guests.

None of this would be possible without the support of our community partners, who play a vital role in the success of our residents. Together, we are making a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.

Thank you for standing with us in our mission to provide hope and opportunity to those experiencing homelessness. Your continued support fuels our efforts and brings us closer to our shared vision of a brighter future for all.

Best,
Jenifer
