We All Need Someone

A Story About Misty

Misty grew up with an abusive father and ran away from home at the age of 14.  After the death of her younger brother, the streets became her home.  Too young to deal with the loss, Misty turned to drugs and alcohol to numb the pain.  Without a lot of options her life began to self-destruct as she searched for help and found that those she trusted only hurt her, left her or died.
We all need someone who believes in us even if we never meet face to face.  Thank you for all you have done for all of us and will do for others.

Misty became a mother to seven children.  Two of her children died at birth and she went through a bad divorce both of which caused an additional slide into her addictions.  Crime was her means for survival at this point which landed her in prison, a marked felon.   After her release from prison, Misty was able to regain custody of her five children.

Tragically, in July 2012
her 15-year-old son was killed in an automobile accident.  This was the final straw for Misty and she spiraled downwards turning to drugs and living in a truck.  She was tired humiliated, embarrassed and had no self-worth.  She was at the bottom.  This is when she came to Benjamin’s House.

In March, Misty and her fiancé moved into the shelter.  In the short time they were here they did things they never would have done for themselves before.  Job Club helped them with their confidence and how to apply for jobs.  Both are now employed.  The meals provided by volunteers have showed them compassion and caring that they so rarely saw in their earlier days.  The staff was helpful with the much needed resources and guidance to keep them on the right path.  Both Misty and her fiancé worked to complete their HSED and go on to college.  They have learned responsibility, trust, structure, self-reliance and respect.

In her own words Misty says “We all need someone who believes in us even if we never meet face to face.  Thank you for all you have done for all of us and will do for others.”
