Changing the Narrative

Determination to Change the Narrative

Picture
This client successfully moved into their own housing after demonstrating significant perseverance and dedication throughout their journey. While staying in shelter, they faced multiple barriers, including housing denials and other challenges, but remained focused on their goals and continued moving forward. Rather than becoming discouraged, they consistently worked toward housing stability by completing applications, communicating with landlords, following through with appointments, advocating for themselves, and actively participating in their individualized care plan.

"Three months ago, I entered a Benjamin House with a felony record and being released from prison with determination to change my narrative. I knew the road ahead would be difficult but refused to let my past define my future. During my time at Benjamin House focused entirely on stability, accountability, and hard work. I also didn't forget that I controlled my attitude and my effort. I Saved the necessary resources to transition into permanent stable housing. I am incredibly grateful for the resources that have helped me along the way, (Benjamin's House) with the right mindset and relentless effort, it is possible to overcome and rebuild a secure, positive life."

Throughout their time in shelter, the client maintained full-time employment. They took pride in their work and demonstrated a strong work ethic. Their commitment to employment played an important role in helping them work toward long-term stability and independence.

The client also remained dedicated to their sobriety and recovery goals. Through their continued commitment to recovery, they demonstrated resilience, accountability, and personal growth.

In addition to working on housing, employment, and recovery goals, the client consistently completed daily responsibilities and chores within the shelter. They regularly contributed to maintaining a clean, respectful, and welcoming environment for everyone. Their willingness to help and participate showed responsibility and consideration for the community around them.

Beyond their personal accomplishments, this client was known for being kind, caring, and supportive of others in the shelter. They often helped fellow residents, including teaching others how to prepare meals in the kitchen and offering encouragement to those facing their own challenges. Their positive attitude, willingness to help, and genuine compassion made a meaningful impact on both residents and staff.

The case manager is extremely proud of the growth, determination, and resilience this client has shown throughout their time in shelter. Watching them overcome obstacles, remain committed to their goals, and ultimately achieve stable housing has been inspiring. We wish them continued success as they begin this next chapter and are confident they will continue building on the progress they have made.
