I am honored to share an inspiring success story that reflects the profound impact our community, area resources, and staff at Benjamin’s House have on others. This story exemplifies the determination and resilience that pave the path to success, and how that success, in turn, becomes a source of inspiration for others.
Catey's Journey: A Story of Determination and Triumph Catey came to Benjamin’s House after facing significant challenges. From her first day, Catey radiated kindness and a heartfelt determination. Her presence was uplifting, and her story became a beacon of hope for both staff and residents alike.
Catey’s journey was one of growth, healing, and giving back. She embraced every opportunity to build her future, attending NA meetings and utilizing the support of Recovery Coaches. Her commitment to recovery was evident when she progressed to co-leading a Crystal Meth Anonymous (CMA) meeting alongside another resident, Melissa (November 2024 A Story of Melissa and Mia). Catey became an invaluable part of the support system for others struggling with addiction, offering guidance, encouragement, and understanding.
When Catey asked where she could print materials for her meetings, we directed her to local resources but also stepped in to ensure she had what she needed. We printed the readings and materials for her to facilitate stronger meetings and support her path toward self-sufficiency. The moment she received these resources, she was beyond appreciative and grateful, eager to continue moving forward. Every individual's journey is unique, and Catey’s path—especially her transition into a leadership role—was truly remarkable.
We are deeply honored to have been part of Catey’s journey. Her determination and resilience are an inspiration, and her story is a powerful reminder of the impact that our community has on individuals. Your contributions provide hope, stability, and the resources necessary for success. With your support, Catey and others like her are able to rebuild their lives, giving back as they progress toward a brighter future.
Thank you for being an essential part of this journey. Warm regards, Jenifer
A Story of Determination and Triumph | From the Case Manager Catey entered our shelter in September of 2024. Prior to her arrival, she had just completed drug treatment and, before that, had been released from jail after serving time on drug-related charges. Right from the start, sobriety was a significant barrier to address. In addition, she was going through a divorce with her now ex-husband, who was an active user at the time.
Without hesitation, Catey began attending NA meetings in the area and utilizing the support of Recovery Coaches. She even progressed to the point where she co-led a Crystal Meth Anonymous (CMA) meeting alongside another resident, Melissa (from last month’s story). Catey became an invaluable part of the support system for other residents struggling with addiction.
By October 2024, Catey had secured housing. Her ex-husband was being evicted, and she was awarded the apartment through the divorce settlement. However, she had to wait until December 2024 to move in. At the end of October, she started working. Despite the many challenges she faced, Catey approached everything with determination. She was a model resident, always completing her chores, attending meetings, keeping her room clean, and following her case plan perfectly. Because of her consistency, we began meeting only every other week.
There was still one significant hurdle left: she needed to come up with the money to move into her new place on time. Catey had fines to pay, an AODA assessment fee, and costs associated with reinstating her driver’s license. Luckily, on 11/7/24, she attended a MARE (now Center Point) event at the college. At the event, Catey connected with St. Vincent de Paul and shared her situation. After a few weeks of follow-ups, they awarded her the security deposit assistance. This, combined with the little she was able to save, was just enough to cover her move-in costs.
Throughout her time at the shelter, Catey faced significant challenges, but she never faltered. She remained focused and checked in regularly with me and other staff members whenever new hurdles arose. Together, we found solutions that worked for her. On the first part of December, as planned, Catey moved into her new housing. We also helped her acquire furniture and household items for her new place.
This story is one of my favorites so far. It showcases what success can look like in the shelter, especially with Catey’s ongoing contributions to the NA community. Additionally, it highlights the success of Center Point and the invaluable resources it provides to our residents and those in need in our community.
This story also went beyond support to Catey. It illustrates the impact we can have outside the shelter as well—work that often goes unseen. For instance, Catey’s ex-husband’s eviction was now an opportunity for intervention. Knowing his situation allowed me to reach out and collaborate with him on homeless prevention. In another success story, he was able to secure housing without needing to enter the shelter or strain other resources.
