A Second Shot

A Story About Adriana

Adriana was a resident that stayed at Benjamin’s House for almost 3 months during the summer of 2015.  Here is her story:

I have moved around quite a bit in my lifetime.  I was born and raised in Bulgaria.  I was eventually adopted and thought as a kid I was the luckiest kid in the world.  Little did I realize it I was headed down the hardest path in my life.
Coming to Benjamin’s House was like having a second shot at making life right.

At the age of 14 I was sent to a boarding school until I turned 18.  My entire world was disrupted.

I struggled with a lot of anger, depression, anxiety, self-harm and lots of insecurity.   During that time and as I was growing up, I happened to burn bridges with many people and made some choices that were not the wisest.  I lost a lot during that time… friends, a place to stay and a lot of personal belongings.

I left St. Louis, Missouri in the hopes of bettering myself. I thought that moving to Rice Lake, Wisconsin would do just that but in all actuality it felt like I had stepped into a new nightmare. Never did I imagine at the age of 22 I would end up homeless, nowhere to go and nowhere to turn. At this point I had two choices: I either get better or end up bitter.

Coming to Benjamin’s House was like having a second shot at making life right.  I was given a safe place to sleep at night, food and clothing. I was shocked with the staff that worked with me and saw how much time and effort they invested in everyone who has stepped foot in these doors. I decided that I was only going up from here. My rock bottom was life changing.

I am proud to say that since leaving Benjamin’s House I have a place to live and I have started classes at UW-Barron County.  I have made some positive changes in my life and am now on the right path to success.
